The DHM team was at the D&AD awards show last week, as some of our work for Howies was nominated for a copywriting pencil.
The presentation was hosted by Simon Amstell of ‘Never Mind the Buzzcocks’ fame, and his opening address seemed to go down well with the assembled creative community.
Partly because it was wittily written, and delivered with perfect timing.
But mostly because its theme was that guaranteed crowd-pleaser – advertising industry self-loathing.
You just can’t go wrong in front of an audience of advertising execs by reminding it of the triviality of what it collectively does, and how low down it really sits on the totem pole of true art and creativity.
Which I’m alright with personally. Probably more than anything, it’s the presence of an ‘I would have been a xxx…’ at the heart of each of our individual self-stories that binds us all together.
But it did get me wondering…does this happen at ‘Arbitrageur of the Year’ awards ceremonies, or at the annual general meeting of the Auditors’ Association? Would top investment bankers pay to have someone take the piss out of them for being greedy parasites, or the cream of the auditing profession to be reminded that they once dreamed of being rocket scientists?
Doubt it, somehow…
