I just read that the Duchy Originals brand is in deep trouble, with annual profits down from £1.53 million to an anaemic £57,400.
Most would probably put that down to belt-tightening in an economic downturn.
Not I.
I blame the organic humbug.
When I first saw the product extension a few months ago I was a bit baffled…
Is there really a group of people out there who both insist on organic in everything and regularly eat boiled mints?
I struggled to imagine anyone I’d ever known who might meet that description.
But then the arrival of the organic humbug began to infect my perceptions of the whole Duchy range.
If it can attempt to slide something as ridiculous as this past us, maybe the whole brand is just one big con job?
Could the anti-organic rabids be right after all?
My paranoia grew.
And I haven’t bought a Duchy’s product since.
(Paid down my mortgage instead.)
OK, it might just be me who reacted as dramatically as this.
But I still feel the message to premium marketers is clear.
Don’t push your luck.
Even the terminally gullible have their limits…
